Home / Uncategorized / LAPT7 Chile: Fernando Mazzeo ends Day 1B with overall lead

Day 1B is done here at the the LAPT7 Chile Main Event, and with midnight having just struck it was Fernando Mazzeo of Argentina finishing the night having collected the most chips to return with 228,400, making him the start-of-day leader for Friday’s Day 2.

As anticipated, the second Day 1 flight outdrew the first, and by a considerable amount. After yesterday’s 237 total entries, today saw more than 350 to push the overall total near the 600-entry mark.

Twelve hours ago when the noon hour struck it was time once again for another long day’s worth of poker.

Action begins on Day 1B

The ebb and flow and riffling of chips recalled the waves constantly crashing along the rocky coast just outside the Enjoy Viña del Mar Casino and Resort, which in turn recalled the ocean, a favorite subject of the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, and the enigmas of existence… and of Texas hold’em.

Early in the day three LAPT champions found themselves right in a row, with Team PokerStars Pro Nacho Barbero stuck in between. Season 6 saw both Victor Sbrissa (Brazil) and Carter Gill (Uruguay) take titles, and today they took seats next to Nacho with each challenging the Argentinian’s record of two LAPT wins.

Their table would eventually break, and after that Gill would see his stack dwindle before unfortunately busting out with Aâ™  3â™  against the 8â™  7â™  of Guilherme Rebelo when an eight came among the community cards.

Carter Gill’s South American streak slowed today

Alas for Barbero, he’d go bust just before the end of Day 1B as well. So, too, would his fellow Team PokerStars Pro Leo Fernandez. However, the day went much better for Sbrissa, who after battling with a below average stack early chipped up consistently throughout the day and night to end with a healthy 151,400.

To Victor went the chips

Speaking of returning LAPT winners, last year’s LAPT Chile champ Pablo Tavitian was here today hoping to mount a title defense. But the day was a struggle for the Argentinian who ultimately ended the night with just 17,700.

David Williams also started Day 1B slow, and when he spoke with us during the post-Level 4 break he had but 12,500. But the Team PokerStars Pro subsequently turned things around, making his return to South America all the more enjoyable as he ended the night with an above-average stack of 78,900.

A good day for DW

After dinner the re-entry period was finally over, and from there the field whittled swiftly down throughout the final levels.

One player who’d taken advantage of the re-entry option — repeatedly — had been Nicolau Villa-Lobos, the Brazilian with a UKIPT championship, a SCOOP Main Event title, and big EPT and BSOP scores all within the last two years. But his sixth try was a charm, and he quickly spun that starting stack into a handsome 184,600 to end the night.

Nicolau Villa-Lobos looking for major success on yet another tour

Jefferson Melo of Brazil had ended last night as the pace-setter, finishing with 197,500 to lead the 74 who made it through on Wednesday.

But today Mazzeo passed Melo. Others besides Villa-Lobos and Sbrissa bagging big stacks at the end of Day 1B included Alejandro Bernstein (169,900), Julian Menendez (163,000), and Rafael Pardo (119,600). Click here to see a full rundown of the end of Day 1B counts.

A total of 121 players bagged tonight, meaning we’ll be seeing 195 coming back tomorrow, all with hopes of making it to Sunday and then being the next to take home an LAPT trophy. We’ll be back as well at noon local time tomorrow to follow how their quest goes.
