Home / Uncategorized / Weekend Review: Wins for smak777 and Simon Charette, hat tips to the rest

It’s easy to think that clicking the results link further down this page will lead to nothing more exciting than a list of usernames. But before you dismiss it, think of it this way. Those usernames constitute 46 celebrations, some small, some earth-shifting for the joy contained within, and all taking place in the bedrooms, dens, studies, spare rooms, and kitchens of the poker world.

If you’ve ever won a poker tournament, however small, you know how it changes your world slightly, and we think such moments deserve to be noticed, even in a small way. So here you’ll find them recorded for posterity, so that one day PaiPoker302, from Brazil, can prove to friends that he once won a 50 FPP Weekly PLO event for 90 bucks, and so that smak777 can do the same if ever asked “did you really once headline a weekend’s action on PokerStars?”

For it was smak777 who did just that, winning the Sunday Million this weekend and picking up $137,435.03 in the process. It’s a figure that eclipsed any of his previous online victories by country miles.

As Martin Harris wrote, it may not have been the most money earned from the Sunday Majors (that went to fourth place Thomas198713 who benefited most from a four-way deal to the tune of $157,564.68), but it is certainly one of the most notable–one more name to add to that long list of Russian winners. Actually there would be two more names to add, but more on that later.

While smak777 no doubt turned in dreaming of what might come next for them in the world of poker, a more familiar face, yet equally as thrilled, was taking down the Sunday Warm-up, worth just short of six figures.

I don’t know why, but there’s something hugely enjoyable about watching the reaction of a seasoned professional as they win one of the major online titles. Charette is a WSOP bracelet winner, with more than $1.6 million in live tournament winnings, not to mention $3 million earned online. He could be forgiven for a low key reaction, this just the latest triumph in a long steady stream of success stories. But as the tweet above demonstrates, a title means so much more than turning $3 million into $3.1 million.

Catch up on all the details of Charette’s win by reading David Aydt’s report on the PokerStars Blog. The full result was as follows.

Last but not least this was the weekend of the Red Spade Open. As we wrote last week, this was an opportunity not only to take on the ranks of Team PokerStars, it was an chance to earn a slice of the $1 million guarantee. And if that didn’t work out, there was always the $250 bounty on each pro’s heads to have a crack at. Plenty of opportunity to make a return on the $55 buy-in.

The event promised $100,000 to the winner, but that reached $116,249.76 as registration closed, a sum that went un-adjusted by a deal to tolstiykry, another winner from Russia–a phrase unlikely to go out of fashion any time soon.
