As Day 1B heads towards its conclusion, there’s a top-secret classified mission that myself and the rest of the poker media are getting ready to engage in. It’s finding the chip leader with around 520 players still remaining, also know as Operation Haystack. There are multiple targets of opportunity at this point but the most obvious at this point is Clement Genon-Catalot who has 160,000. He’s ahead of Thoras Sonnenschein (125,000) and Dmitry Shchepkin (120,000) but with a decent amount of time still go before the end of the detail, the identity of the chip leader is not a foregone conclusion – in stark contrast to last night where Jonathan Koskas completely ran away with the lead in the last hour.

Notably, there’s very few players over the 100,000 mark at this point, in stark contrast to last night where there were already ten or so players over the this mark going into the last two levels. This is despite there being almost twice as many chips in play as yesterday. Also, there’s been very little pot of note, unlikely Guillaume Darcourt’s spectacular elimination last night in a 260,000 chip pot. Will this change before the end? You’ll have to check back here later for the results of Operation Haystack as the frantic search of 500 players for the chip leader begins right now.
