Home / Uncategorized / IPT Malta: When the chips are down

Like the escalators used to get between the three floors of poker, things are escalating quickly here in Malta. Over 800 players have now been registered for Day 1b, a huge number as everyone wants to get in on the action.

“How long do you reckon it’ll be?” asked Mike McDonald, who had recently been knocked out of the €25,000 High Roller.

“About an hour,” came the reply from the alternates desk. Seemingly satisfied, the Canadian headed off, presumably to get some lunch before returning to the grind.

Even Timex is unable to get into this packed room at the moment

With so many players involved, there’s actually been a slight chip crisis, first on the ground floor where some dealers were struggling with not having enough change to give out to players. Also, some of the new alternates will be coming in with slightly different yellow 1k chips – these have a black mark on the side, instead of the pure yellow chip the IPT would usually use.

Although Malta might not have the most well-known players in the poker world, there are still a number of natives who are involved in the tournament today including Edward Borg, Adino Banini, Giulio Spampinato, Charlo Azzopardi, Jacques Demajo and Stephen Spiteri.
