Home / Uncategorized / Queenstown Snowfest: GodlikeRoy ready to make an impact

It’s been a while since we’ve had the opportunity to write about a Team PokerStars player representing the Australia and New Zealand regions.

We’ve seen plenty of Bryan Huang, Raymond Wu, Vivian Im and Celina Lin on the APPT in recent times, and as much as we like writing about those guys, it’s nice to have a fresh face on the PokerStars team to write about.

That face is the newest member of Team PokerStars Online, Sydney’s Roy “GodlikeRoy” Bhasin.

A renowned high-stakes Pot Limit Omaha cash game player, Bhasin is not often seen on the tournament poker circuit, preferring to grind sixteen tables online than sixteen hours live, but speaking to Bhasin today it sounds like he’ll be making a few more appearances on the APPT this year.

“I love Queenstown, and I’ll be playing in Melbourne,” said Bhasin before play kicked off this afternoon.

Nicki Pickering caught up with Bhasin to find out a little more about “GodlikeRoy”:

Bhasin has a WSOP cash and a side event win at the 2008 Victorian Championships to his credit – both in Pot Limit Omaha disciplines, but is yet to make an impression on the APPT.

Sitting quietly at the table, freshly ironed Team Online patch worn proudly, and earphones drowning out the annoyances of live poker, Bhasin looks like a man with a focus on making an immediate impact in his first major live appearance representing the red spade.

We caught Bhasin in one hand where he called a flop bet, raised the turn, before his opponent donked 1,650 into a pot of over 12,000 on the river on a board of 9♣ 6♦ 2♥ 2â™  K♣ . Bhasin thought for a few moments, but decided to keep the pot under control with a river call holding A♦ A♣ to better his opponent’s 10♦ 10♥ .

A nice start for Bhasin, but tournaments aren’t won on Level 2. Can this online protégé adapt to the slow pace of the live poker scene? Somehow, we think he can.
