Entering Day 3 of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event there was one player who stood out from surviving field of 54 players. Perhaps it was her platinum blonde hair. Or perhaps it was the fact that she was the only female player to reach the money stage of this event.

That player is Xuan Liu.

Liu is one of the most popular female players, not only in the Asia-Pacific, but worldwide, and a great ambassador for women in the game of poker. She’s a former sponsored professional and with almost 15,000 Twitter followers, Liu has built a strong reputation and following in the poker industry.

Liu hails from Canada but she has been spending a lot of time in Australia recently. After finishing second in a side event at the Aussie Millions in January, Liu stuck around in Australia to enjoy the summer here and play some more poker. She made a deep run at the ANZPT in Perth, finishing in 18th place in the Main Event, and now has her second ANZPT cash locked up here in Sydney.

The other reason Liu stands out in this field is a stat that may surprise some. As far as we are aware, Liu has more career earnings than any of the 54 players who started Day 3 of this event. Her US$1.5 million in career earnings is almost double Australian young gun Michael Kanaan and are almost three times that of Australian veteran Toothpick Tony. Impressive stuff.

The majority of Liu’s earnings come courtesy of two massive results on the European Poker Tour. She finished third in the EPT San Remo event in 2011 for €360,000 and then backed that up less than 12 months later with a fourth place in the PCA Main Event for US$600,000.

With cashes at the IPT, EPT, MPC, WPT, APPT and now ANZPT, Liu’s tournament record is as decorated as you will find, but all that’s missing is that elusive major title.

Perhaps that will all change here in Sydney.

Liu is now down to the last 40 players and in good shape to make a deep run in the ANZPT Sydney Main Event. In a recent pot, Liu eliminated Evan Ryan with all the chips in preflop. We’re not sure what Ryan held, but Liu’s holdings were pretty clear cut as her 8♦ 8♥ made quads on a board of 6♦ 8♣ 8â™  5â™  9♦ . Those lucky eights!

A victory for Liu will not only be a first major title for her, but it will also be the first time a female player has ever won an ANZPT Main Event title. Something that will no doubt provide a great boost for the profile of female poker players in Australia.
